our relationship with all that is

Man can no longer live for himself alone. We must realize that all life is valuable and that we are united to all life. From this knowledge comes our spiritual relationship with the universe.
— Albert Schweitzer

Visualize yourself standing outside on a clear evening. As you gaze up at the stars, you experience the profound silence in the immense space between you and the constellations. As you take a deep, gentle breath, an indefinable feeling of connection and serenity enters. In this moment, you are at one with all that is.

We are now going to explore an element of our lives that is universal to every human being, the need for general renewal of spiritual energy; together with the innate desire to understand and live abundantly with this energy.

The nautilus illustration below, represents your journey of self-awareness and the various points that lead to this wholeness. The tools you have learned to use in your daily business and personal lives, will provide you with the depth and breadth of skills and courage necessary to be the fully empowered you, a warrior.

As you can see, spirituality lies at the very end, most external, so as to encapsulate the essence of your journey and represent an energy greater than ourselves.

The obstacles to spiritual wholeness are very similar to the same barriers you addressed when you examined self-doubt, fear, control, anger, trust, values, etc. Societally, we are taught to address our fears with absolutes about life, ourselves and others. The accompanying dogma and rigid thinking, encourage us to follow the thinking of groups. This can be an extraordinary way to explore. However, it’s important to be cautious. With groups of unified thinking, you can easily lose your individual self and begin to perceive yourself as different and better than others who are not part of the group. Moreover, the illusion of “The one and only way” and “The right path”, can narrow your thinking. Some individuals will hide behind the cloak of spirituality, ringing “holier-than-thou” or “I have it – you don’t” messages. This creates a dangerous shell in which a person seemingly “knows oneself” without doing the work to truly know one’s self.

Your spiritual journey is not about becoming someone else or what others feel you should be. It is about becoming your true self and learning to fully engage in the experience of living. Through this process, you learn to connect with the limitless energy that exists within and without your internal and external universe; all the while understanding, that what you are seeking is unknown and indefinable. This exploration is secular; there are no absolutes, other than the absolute of change. Should you have an existing spiritual belief that includes a Higher Power, you will likely become closer to that Higher Power. You will learn to embrace your inner exploration, as well as challenge it. You will become comfortable with the mystery of the unknown in life, through maintaining a simple faith - faith in the process. Each individual’s path is created through the connection with others and with the universe. You know in your heart that this exploration takes courage, patience and faith. One who chooses to embark on this path, will inevitably achieve greater clarity, insights, creativity and serenity, through a renewed relationship with and access to spiritual energy – the undefined ‘what is’.

Every moment and every event of everyman’s life on earth plants something in his soul. For just as the wind carries thousands of winged seeds, so each moment brings with it germs of spiritual vitality that come to rest imperceptibly in the minds and wills of men.
— Thomas Merton
