Overcoming Imposter's Syndrome

How a Newly Promoted CEO Overcame “Imposter’s Syndrome” to Become an Authentically Confident Leader of His Company.

The Opportunity: James Nesbitt (fictional name used due to VIM’s adherence to strict confidentiality), a 41-year-old was a very bright and highly successful CEO for a mid-sized Energy company, and was recruited to run a much larger energy company (5x yearly revenues, compared to his previous company). The board chairman  saw that James was feeling the pressures of his new position and recommended that he contact our executive coaching firm, which he did in short order, and our work began.

The Challenge: In our initial VIM Assessment and One-on-One Assessment Interviews, it clearly surfaced that he was overwhelmed, feeling self-doubt, and his self-confidence was very low.

The Process: We met every week for 1 hour sessions for the next 90 days. Following our focus on advancing his self-awareness, we continued the following 4 months to concentrate on increasing his emotional intelligence. This was accomplished through our weekly sessions as he completed the VIM exercises most applicable to his challenges, as well as VIM e-Books on leadership and communications development.

The Transformation

In the very first two weeks, as he began to explore his self-worth and discover more and more about himself, we began to see immediate advances in his confidence. James, along with the board chairman could see the changes in very short order, as could his wife. The momentum was established, and his confidence continued to grow to a new level.

What Changed Everything

As he completed each of the weekly exercises and explored Self-Worth, Fear, Self-Honesty, Change, Leadership, Communication and Mindfulness, his self-awareness and emotional intelligence flourished. During their sessions, James continued to share his feelings and perspectives, and both James and his coach saw his self-confidence grow and his self-doubt dissipate. His authentic leadership style not only resurfaced, but had grown rapidly.
